Aging

Are you transitioning to retirement?  Trying to figure out the next chapter in your life?  Experiencing grief or loss? Struggling with caring for a loved one?  Feeling isolated or lonely?  Overwhelmed by health and medical challenges?

You are not alone and we can help.  Our therapists have the specific training and expertise to help you navigate many of the issues common to the aging experience, such as:

Aging

While getting older is a universal experience, it is also a unique one, and can bring with it both joys and challenges.  Many associate old age with loss:  loss of identity; loss of health; loss of independence; loss of those we love.  And, unfortunately, we are more likely to experience these losses as we age.  But depression is not a normal part of aging.   Despite the stereotypes, research has shown that overall, older adults are happier and have lower rates of clinical depression than younger people.   The keys to contentment in the face of loss are resilience and perspective.   We will help you to strengthen your resilience and change your perspective.  We understand both the challenges that you may be facing, as well the importance of savoring—and creating-- the joys.  We can help support you as you navigate the ups and downs often inherent in our later years, as well as assist in finding additional resources when you may need them.  We will tap into the strengths you have developed across your life, and utilize your wisdom and experience to meet your current challenges.  When necessary, we will work on changing patterns that no longer serve you well.  Through it all, we will validate your experiences and bear witness to your struggles; you do not have to face them alone.

“Old age” does not have to be something to dread or deny.  Believe it or not, it can be something to embrace.  If you are feeling overwhelmed, sad, anxious or lost, we can help.  You do not need to go through it alone.
